Obrey Motowylo enjoyed his best season to date in 2009 and brought an unexpected but welcome level of excitement to the WPCA Dodge Pro Tour. He posted the first two major show wins of his career at the Ponoka Stampede and the Strathmore Heritage Days Stampede, and qualified for 4 sudden death championship final heats at the Ponoka Stampede, Bonnyville Chuckwagon Championship, WPCA Dodge Pro Tour Championship and the Battle of the North en route to a runner-up finish for the World Chuckwagon Championship. He won the Calgary Stampede's Orville Strandquist Award for Top Rookie Driver, qualified for the Calgary Stampede’s inaugural “Semi Final Saturday,” received the WPCA’s Most Improved Driver Award and for the 2nd consecutive year he had a horse named to the WPCA's Equine Outfit of Excellence. 2009 also saw Obrey post 27 top ten runs, including 8 first place runs and 10 runs that placed inside the top five. Including his wins at Ponoka and Strathmore, he had top ten overall aggregate finishes at 7 of 11 show championships that he competed at. Obrey started his career with a brief run in the Western Chuckwagon Association (WCA) driving a partial year in 2004 where he won the Teepee Creek Stampede. The following year he competed on the CPCA circuit and was the CPCA's High Point Rookie Driver in 2005. Prior to driving the big wagons, Obrey drove Pony Chuckwagons and Chariots for over 15 years and was a 3-time World Pony Chuckwagon Champion and won the North American Pony Chuckwagon Championship 3 consecutive years. In addition, Obrey has captured over 150 championships of various kinds driving Pony Chuckwagons. He participated in EnCana’s WPCA/4-H Mentorship Program in 2006 and 2007. Obrey is a farmer and works for H & E Oilfield Services in the off-season. Obrey and his wife Angie have 2 children - Hayden and Ethan - and make their home in Bluffton, Alberta.
