Personal Information
An up and coming star driver, Mitch won the 2011 Richard Cosgrave Badlands Dinosaur Derby en route to being named the 2011 WPCA Top Rookie Driver. in 2012 posted 8 top ten runs, including 3 runs that cracked the top five, and qualified for his first Calgary Stampede GMC Rangeland Derby in 2013. Mitch joined Rick Fraser and Jerry Bremner as the only drivers in WPCA history to win a show championship and the Top Rookie Driver buckle in the same year. He started his career in on the amateur Western Chuckwagon Association (WCA) circuit in 2004 and was the overall WCA champion in back to back years in 2008 and 2009, and has won twelve WCA show championships during his tenure with the WCA. Prior to driving chuckwagons Mitch played football for the University of Alberta Golden Bears where he received All Canadian Honors. He was drafted in 2002 by the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League and went on to attend training camp with the Alouettes later that year. In the off season, Mitch is a 2nd generation chuckwagon driver whose father is fellow competitor Kirk Sutherland. He is an owner/operator of Hitch’Em Oilfield Hauling, and enjoys watching hockey. Mitch and his wife Heather have two children – Emerson and Weston – and make their home in Grande Prairie, Alberta.
